Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardane said yesterday the current lockdown would have to be extended by at least two more weeks to witness the outcome of the current travel restrictions.

He told the media that if people follow health practices properly, the number of positive cases would reduce and the country could be reopened. He said the country would return to normalcy by the end of October if vaccinations are completed by mid October. When asked, he said the final decision had not been taken on the administering of a booster dose in Sri Lanka. Responding to a question, he said the number of cases had increased due to the spread of the Delta variant in the country.
