Defence Secretary Kamal Gunaratne said that a new methodology is being prepared to destroy drugs seized on a large scale, soon after it is seized.
"As soon as the drugs are seized in large scale drug busts, the drug will be presented to a judge and it will be destroyed before the judge after obtaining samples " He said the Ministry of Justice and the Attorney General's Department are working on this and he hopes that system could be implemented soon.
General (Rtd) Gunaratne said that there is a shortage of narcotics in the country due to continuous raids on narcotic dealers.
As a result, the price of narcotics in the country had also gone up, the secretary said. "Drug trafficking in the country has come to a standstill due to the arrest and imprisonment of major drug traffickers. Several large-scale drug traffickers have been detained at the Boossa High-Security Prison and the use of telephones has been completely prevented," he said.
