The government yesterday approved Sri Lankan migrant workers to import electric vehicles at the cost, insurance, and freight (CIF) value of up to 50% of the value of remittances made by them through official channels from May 2022 to December 2023.

The cabinet approval in this regard has been granted by the decision on August 8, 2022, to provide identified relief with the objective of encouraging Sri Lankans  engaged in overseas employment to send remittances through legal channels.

The Labour and Foreign Employment Ministry has issued the relevant circular, allowing eligible migrant employees to import a electric bike valued up to US$ 25,000 and a four-wheeled electric vehicle valued up to US$ 65,000.

Steps have been taken with the objective of encouraging foreign exchange earned by emigrant employees to be remitted to Sri Lanka.

Accordingly, approval has been granted to import a electric bike with a CIF value of up to 50% of the foreign exchange value remitted up to either April 30, 2023, or up to the date an application is submitted for the import of a vehicle.

Meanwhile, approval has also been granted to import a four-wheeled electric vehicle with a CIF value of up to 50% of the foreign exchange value remitted from May 1, 2022, to December 31, 2023, to this country.
