The Road Development Authority (RDA) announced the closure of the New Kelani Bridge, popularly known as the ‘Golden Gate Kalyani’ bridge, in three phases, beginning today.
The Transport and Highways Ministry said as construction work on the New Kelani Bridge has been completed, it has reached the point where all responsibilities related to the project have to be reviewed before releasing the contracted company, and in some instances, certain changes would be required to be carried out by the contractor.
The Ministry also said that the New Kelani Bridge is currently safe for use without any risks, and individuals can continue to utilize it in the existing manner. Nevertheless, they express their intention to adhere to the contractual stipulations and proceed with the specified processes.
Accordingly, the New Kelani Bridge is to be closed in the following three phases due to essential modernization activities, while motorists are advised to use alternate routes during these durations:
Under the first phase, the bridge will close from 9.00 p.m. today to 6.00 a.m. on Monday (4).
Under the second phase, the bridge will close from 9.00 p.m. on December 8 to 6.00 a.m. on December 11.
Meanwhile, under the third phase, the bridge will close from 9.00 p.m. on December 15 to 6.00 a.m. on December 18.
Motorists are requested to use alternate routes to evade the traffic congestion.
