Chairperson of the Hambantota Lanka Salt Limited, Attorney-at-Law Nishantha Sandabharana said that debris and chemicals added to the sea from the fire-stricken container ship X-Press Pearl have no impact on the salt production and people should not be scared to consume salt.
“I am confidently telling people not to have any fear to consume salt. Sea water always contains poisonous substances, not just today. The water is not taken directly to produce salt and it is not possible either. Water taken to produce salt is kept in salt beds for 45 days to evaporate and then is used to produce salt. Even if ten other ships were to catch fire, Sri Lanka will not experience a salt crisis as we already have a surplus of salt. Salt harvest is being obtained these days using the water collected two months ago.
This ship has no effect on the production of salt at all,” he added.
