Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena yesterday said there are no moves to take up a fresh vote for the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill.
Speaker made this comment when Daily Mirror inquired whether there is any move to take up a fresh vote for it.
“We have no intention of that nature,” he told Daily Mirror in response.
It was reported earlier that the Speaker had ordered two inquiries to be conducted to determine whether there were technical or administrative errors when counting and calculating the votes.
The Bill was however duly approved by Parliament by a majority of 91 votes with 149 votes in favour and 58 against.
Meanwhile, Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella alleged that some of the ruling party MPs are trying to convince the Speaker to go for a fresh count and that there are no provisions for a recount of votes as per the standing orders. “I have been in Parliament for more than 30 years and I have never seen a recount of votes in Parliament during all these years,” he said.
