No stocks of rice which contain toxic substances have been imported to Sri Lanka after 2017, the Acting Registrar of pesticides Lasantha Ranaweera said yesterday.

A statement from the President’s office quoting Ranaweera said the stocks of rice that have been imported in January this year do not contain any toxic substances.  Also he said no investigations had been carried out on stocks of rice which had been imported recently as claimed by some media reports.

He said toxic substances had been found in 68 samples that had been collected from Kandy District way back in 2017. “There is no reason to panic over the matter as there is nothing wrong with the stocks of rice imported recently.

The President’s Office which quoted the Secretary to the Ministry of Trade Commerce and Food Security Sisira Kodikara said a complaint will be lodged with the CID and an investigation will be carried out to determine as to how the false information had been spread.
