Minority parties representing the North and the East are contemplating fielding their own common candidate for the Presidential Elections expected to be held next year, a member representing those parties said yesterday.
Accordingly, the parties which represent the North and the East had decided not to support any main candidate representing the South for the next Presidential Election. The minority parties in the North supported Sarath Fonseka in 2010, Maithripala Sirisena in 2015 and Sajith Premadasa in 2019. However, the North and East parties have decided to field their own candidate in 2024.
This development comes amidst a meeting of party representatives which Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawaradena had called in today to discuss on constitutional reforms.
