The Nuwara Eliya Economic Centre was closed yesterday due to the breakdown of vegetable supplies. President of the All-Island Economic Centre Collective Aruna Shantha said vegetable cultivators had ceased to supply vegetables to protest against the shortage of fertiliser that resulted in crop failure.
He said the step taken by vegetable cultivators had affected the supplies to the Manning Market in Colombo and other economic centres.
He pointed out that the closure of economic centres would be unavoidable in the days to come if the Ministry of Agriculture ignored the issue.
