Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa yesterday urged the European Union (EU) to play an indispensable role to save the Sri Lankan tourism sector from crashing.

Mr. Premadasa made this request when a delegation of EU members led by the Head of Political, Trade and Communications Section and Deputy Head of Mission of the Delegation of the European Union in Colombo Thorsten Bargfrede who met him at the opposition leader’s office yesterday.

“IF EU could play an indispensable role to prevent the crash of the tourism industry in Sri Lanka it would be a great help. It’s the opinion that players in the local tourism industry would crash by end June when the moratorium is given to those from the sector for their borrowings,” Mr, Premadasa said.

Also, he requested the EU to intervene in getting travel advisories issued on Sri Lanka removed. “As an opposition party, we would like to assure you that Sri Lanka is absolutely safe. Please take that positive message to your member states,” he told the EU delegation.

The Leader of the Opposition also requested the international community to provide their cooperation and strength for the promotion of the tourism industry.
