A Public Health Inspector who solicited Rs.5,000 from the canteen keeper of the Peradeniya Bandaranaike Children’s Hospital was arrested yesterday by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.
Investigations revealed that the suspect had pointed out the shortcomings in the doctors’ canteen and obtained gratifications at times to refrain from legal action. Bribery Commission that initiated investigations of the canteen keeper’s complaint in this regard arrested the suspect when he accepted the gratification. He was handed over to the Peradeniya Police for further action.
Police said the suspect would be produced before Kandy Magistrate after recording his statement. In a similar incident, a Development Officer of the Hanguranketha Divisional Secretariat was arrested by the Bribery Commission on suspicion of accepting a gratification of Rs.4,000 from a businessman yesterday. The Development Officer attached to the Business Registration Branch of the Divisional Secretariat is alleged to have obtained the gratification to expedite action on the businessman’s file.
