The Irrigation Department yesterday decided to suspend the project to construct a jogging track on the breakwater of the ancient Parakrama Samudra tank in Polonnaruwa.
Department's Director General Eng. K. D. N. Siriwardana told the Daily Mirror that due to several opposing parties continuing to disagree with the construction project.
They were compelled to suspend the project and repair the damage caused to the breakwater.
Several parties across the Polonnaruwa District made their way to the construction site on Friday to witness for themselves the destruction caused to the ancient water conservation system, he said.
However, it was reported that the breakwater of the historic Parakrama Samudraya had been destroyed to a great extent by heavy machinery, including backhoes,which had been deployed to construct the jogging track.
