Medical experts have issued a stern advisory urging parents to refrain from smoking in the presence of children, citing a notable increase in cases of wheezing among pediatric patients.
According to Lady Ridgeway Hospital’s Consultant Pediatrician, Dr. Deepal Perera, this surge follows viral infections reminiscent of influenza-like illnesses.
“We have observed a concerning rise in children presenting with wheezing, which is often triggered or exacerbated by secondhand smoke,” Dr. Perera told Daily Mirror.
“Wheezing manifests as a high-pitched whistling sound during breathing and can indicate airway constriction, potentially leading to breathing difficulties,” he explained.
Highlighting the detrimental effects of passive smoking on children’s respiratory health, Dr. Perera emphasized, “Exposure to secondhand smoke not only worsens wheezing symptoms but also increases the likelihood of recurrent respiratory issues.”
He stressed the importance of creating smoke-free environments for children to minimize respiratory distress.
In addition to the advisory on smoking, Dr. Perera reassured parents about the use of inhalers in managing wheezing episodes.
“Inhalers prescribed by healthcare providers are safe and effective in alleviating wheezing and improving respiratory function,” he affirmed.
Dr. Perera also urged parents to remain vigilant for symptoms such as chronic cough and persistent wheezing, which warrant prompt medical evaluation.
