The people are allowed to cross provincial borders only on humanitarian grounds, such as attending the funeral of close family members, Police Spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana said yesterday.
He said restrictions on inter-province travel was still in effect despite lifting the islandwide travel restriction.
He said the police will strictly implement the quarantine order issued by the Director General of Health Services and no one is allowed to cross provincial borders.
The spokesman however said that only the essential services and those who want to cross the provincial borders on humanitarian grounds be allowed to travel between provinces after providing the required documents.
Senior DIG Rohana said that vehicles and those travelling in them will be inspected at the 14 entry and exit points of the Western Province to arrest those violating the inter-province travel ban.
“We have checked 6,512 people at 14 entry and exit points of the Western Province along with 3,583 vehicles on Monday.,” he said.
He said 266 vehicles were turned away for attempting to cross the provincial borders in violation of the quarantine law.
“We are strictly implementing the provincial restriction and the public are requested not to attempt to cross the border for entertainment purposes,” he said.
