Piyumi Fonseka, Deputy Editor of Investigations at the Daily Mirror, was honoured with the Bronze Award for her coverage of human trafficking issues and the efforts to raise awareness about the pressing concern. The award ceremony, organised by Anuradhapura-based local community organisation Safe Foundation with the support of USAID, took place at Waters Edge last Sunday (30) to mark World Human Trafficking Day.

Piyumi Fonseka’s recent investigation shed light on a nefarious human trafficking network involving Sri Lankans in Laos, exposing a heinous criminal operation that had left many innocent lives trapped. Her in-depth report not only revealed the dark reality of human trafficking but also was instrumental in initiating rescue missions that saved several Sri Lankan victims from the clutches of exploitation.  The exclusive revelation delved into the trafficking network targeted vulnerable young Sri Lankan IT graduates, mostly men, promising them lucrative opportunities in the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Laos.
