Action has been taken to provide adequate security to the area where Journalist Chamuditha Samarawickrema resides, police said.

They said Chamuditha Samarawickrema had requested the Piliyandala Magistrate’s Court to issue an order to provide him with protection.

Accordingly, the Magistrate directed the Director of Assistance and Protection of Victims of Crime and Witnesses to act in accordance with the Victims and Witnesses Protection Act.  Police said following the receipt of the order by the IGP, action is being taken by the Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security to seek guidance and advice from the Victims and Witnesses Protection Authority.

The IGP directed the Senior DIG in charge of the Western Province to provide appropriate security to Chamuditha Samarawickrema until guidance is received from the authority.  Samarawickrama’s residence in Piliyandala came under attack as some unidentified elements pelted stones at his house and threw excreta on February 14.
