Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) yesterday opposed the gazette notification issued postponing the local government election and stressed that some kind of election should be held to find out where the people stand.
The party also alleged that the Government had indirectly revealed its intention to hold a referendum to extend its term by two years.
SJB MP Thushara Indunil Amarasena told a press conference that Government should hold either the Local Government election or the Provincial Council elections to find out the people’s perception on the ruling party. “ It was those in this government which lobbied hard for an election while in the Opposition. They themselves are postponing elections today,” MP Amarasena said.
“Government had indicated its intention of holding a referendum to extend its term by two years. However it is advisable to hold an election so that one could feel the pulse of the people,” he added.
