The Public Health Inspectors Union requested people to go into self-imposed lockdown from next Monday to contain further spread of COVID-19.

PHIU Head Upul Rohana said they were bitterly disappointed with the Government for not declaring a lockdown in such a juncture that the country is plunging into a catastrophic situation due to highly contagious Delta variant.

He also urged the relevant authorities to make their decisions by coming out of air conditioned atmosphere and see by themselves what actually happens on the ground.

“We will no longer insist the Government to impose restrictions or lockdown as they continuously ignore our suggestion and the opinion of medical experts,” he stressed.

“That is why we request people to practice self imposed lockdown starting from this Monday and continue it for at least seven days. Thus, people can collect the essential goods necessary for the next seven days over the weekend abiding by health guidelines and practices,” the PHIU Head highlighted.

He also warned that the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths are sure to rise drastically in the coming days.
