President seeks British assistance to assess environmental damage caused

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa sought British assistance to assess the damage done to Sri Lanka’s marine environment after the X- Press Pearl container vessel caught fire off Colombo Port, a statement from the President’s Media Division (PMD) said.   

He made this request when British High Commissioner Sarah Hulton called on him yesterday.   
According to the statement, the British envoy commended the government’s efforts in the containment of the pandemic. The statement said the High Commissioner paid her attention to ensure her country’s support to the exercise.   

She also agreed to exchange technological knowledge with Sri Lanka on its move to fulfil 80 percent of energy requirement from renewables and storage of solar energy. She also hailed the President’s initiative to introduce organic agriculture. 

 
The President also said plans are in place to increase Sri Lanka’s forest cover to 30 percent.
