President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has given the most important portfolios to a few ministers as these are essential to run the country while others are kept open for anyone who wants to accept, Chief Government Whip Johnston Fernando said yesterday.

Minister Fernando told journalists that a new Finance Minister was appointed as it was necessary, while he appointed me as the Chief government Whip and Dinesh Gunawardene as the Leader of the House. “We were appointed as it was necessary for Parliament to meet,” he said.   “The other ministries are kept vacant so that anyone could come and accept them,” he added.   He said there is no necessity for the President to resign as he still holds the mandate given to him by 6.9 million people in 2019. “ I also feel that SLPP still holds a  majority in the government,” he said.

The minister said there is a certain group behind the protests other than the ordinary citizens.
