An inmate who had disappeared from the Welikada Prison last month was found at the Colombo Remand prison after being remanded over another offense.

Prison spokesman Chandana Ekanayake said the suspect was admitted to the Welikada Prison on September 16 and had escaped from the prison on the same day.

While the investigations and inquiries are being carried out regarding the disappearance, the Kaduwela Magistrate Court remanded the above missing prisoner in the  Colombo remand prison as a suspect on charges of possessing heroin on September 30.

The prison officials obtained a statement from the suspect after identifying him as the missing prisoner from Welikada prison.

Accordingly, he informed that he had escaped by scaling the walls of the prison.  He reportedly revealed to officials how he had escaped on the very first day of his detention, with minimum effort. Investigating officers have found that the escaped prisoner was good at climbing coconut trees as well as dancing in a dance group.

Charges regarding the escaped prisoner are to be presented to the Prison Tribunal, the spokesman said.
