Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) is not organising the protests on April 3, 2022 but will only support it, its General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara said yesterday.
Mr. Madduma Bandara told Daily Mirror that his party is only coming out to support the social media groups that are organising the protest.
Asked as to why Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa is calling the people to join the protest on April 3 through his Facebook page, Mr. Madduma Bandara said Mr. Premadasa is organising a separate protest in Hatton on that day. “Mr. Premadasa is only inviting people to join the protest which is organised by him,” the SJB General Secretary said.
“People are suffering in darkness; they don’t have gas, food. We have tolerated the government enough. It’s time to act, therefore join us and take to the streets on April 3,” Mr. Premadasa said in his Facebook message.
MP Rajitha Senaratne also invited people to take to the streets at 3 pm through social media.
The WhatsApp message sent out by a social media group earlier asked the people to come out in the morning.
The UNP also stated that it will not participate in the protest on Sunday.” United National Party will not be joining any protest organised by anonymous groups. We are committed to conducting our Satyagraha Campaign around the country. The next Satyagraha will be held at Matara on April 6, 2022,” an official Twitter message of the party said,
Meanwhile, Professor Chandima Wijegunawardana who formed the Sri Lanka Humanity Party has urged the people not to allow any politician to mislead them. “Don’t get misled by the politicians who are trying to get mileage out of your action,” she said.
