United National Party (UNP) General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara told the civil organisers to continue their hunger strike, stating it is good for people who are a nuisance to society to die.
Several UNP MPs, including the General Secretary, visited the Elections Commission yesterday to discuss holding the election.
At the same time, a civil organization held a protest in front of the Elections Commission, demanding the election date be announced.
UNP MP Vajira Abeywardena addressed the media, saying this is not the first time an election has been postponed in the country. “One election was postponed in 1991 due to civil unrest, during which more than 1,000 candidates were killed. The presidential election scheduled for 2005 was also postponed,” he said.
Despite the country’s bankruptcy, MP Abeywardena assured that this election would be held on time.
During the media briefing, some civil activists interrupted and asked if they should stop their hunger strike.
In response, MP Range Bandara told them not to stop their hunger strike until their death, adding that it is good for people who are a nuisance to society to die.
