Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene yesterday announced that Ranjan Ramanayake MP ceases to be an MP as per the constitution and the Parliamentary Elections Act and that this has been conveyed to Chairman of Elections Commission.

“I wish to inform Parliament that after considering legal opinion of experts and the provisions of constitution Secretary General of Parliament Dhammika Dassanayake had informed the Chairman of Elections Commission that the parliamentary seat of Ranjan Ramanayake MP had fallen vacant as per section 64(1) of the Parliamentary Elections Act and as per section 66 (d) of the constitution,” the Speaker said in his announcement.
