The next year’s budget of the Ratnapura Pradeshiya Sabha was defeated at the budget meeting yesterday when five ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) members voted against.
The budget presented in council by Chairman Sugath Dissanayake received 17 votes for and 18 against. One of the SLPP members, Ratna Kanegalla was absent.
The Ratnapura Pradeshiya Sabha with a strength of 36 members is represented by 18 SLPP members, 12 UNP members and five UPFA members and a JVP member. Sabaragamuwa Province Commissioner of Local Government Duleep Somaratne said the chairman should table the budget in council and seek the passage of the budget by majority vote to retain his post.
