National People’s Power (NPP) leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said yesterday he was ready to withdraw his nomination for presidency if two MPs, who had no future political agendas, would be appointed as the President and the Prime Minister.

He told the media after a discussion with the representatives of the Galle Face strugglers at JVP headquarters that they had several rounds of discussions with all the political parties to come to a consensus on appointing a President and Prime Minister without future political agendas.

He said even though some political parties agreed to come to a consensus on the matter, their stance has been changed now.

“We proposed to them that we will appoint a President and a Prime Minister without future political agendas and form an all-party government for a short period of time and then go for an election. We also proposed to appoint a council of Galle Face strugglers to oversee or mediate to resolve the economic and political crisis faced by the country,” he said.

He said they have not given up completely the effort to come to such an agreement, and added that he was ready to withdraw his nomination even at the last moment if such a consensus was reached at.
He said Ranil Wickremesinghe was attempting to get elected as the President through Parliament and that his moves should be defeated.
