Rock cuttings done for various purposes such as construction of roads and buildings have caused frequent landslides in Sri Lanka, a geologist said yesterday.
Well known Geologist Professor Kapila Dahanayake told Daily Mirror that rock cuttings done for construction of buildings or roads especially on slopes in the hills have resulted in frequent landslides in Sri Lanka in the recent past.
“Retaining walls should be constructed or grass should be grown after cutting soil to prevent landslides,” he said.
He noted that it is mostly minor landslides that occur in Sri Lanka rather than large scale ones.
Meanwhile the Department of Meteorology said the adverse weather conditions which Sri Lanka experienced during the last few weeks is due to the Southwest Monsoon condition which is a usual phenomenon within the months of May and June. A meteorologist attached to the department told Daily Mirror that there is no abnormality in the frequent showers which Sri Lanka has experienced during recent weeks. “One would understand this situation if he or she studied the rainfall patterns every year. Usually the Southwest monsoon winds which are blowing in the direction of Sri Lanka carry moisture and that results in heavy rains,” he said.
