The Supreme Court (SC) has yesterday rejected a motion filed by former State Minister Ranjan Ramanayake through his lawyers seeking reconsideration of his imprisonment for Contempt of Court.

Ranjan Ramanayake, through his lawyers, filed the motion on February 1 in the Supreme Court after being sentenced to four years in prison for Contempt of Court.

In the motion Ramanayake, through his lawyers, requested the Court to give him the legal right to appeal against a sentence imposed under the Convention on Civil and Political Rights.

Accordingly, Ranjan Ramanayake had moved the motion through his lawyers requesting that he be allowed to file an appeal and that the appeal be considered before a panel of five or more judges.

The motion was filed by Attorney-at-Law Dinesh Vidanapathirana and relevant documents and affidavits were also submitted before the Court.
