The ruling party and Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) are engaged in a tug-of-war for the top posts in Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) and Committee on Public Accounts (COPA).

Accordingly the Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa claimed that President Ranil Wickremesinghe had agreed to appoint Eran Wickramaratne and Kabir Hashim for the posts while Leader of the House Susil Premajayantha said some party leaders did not agree with this.

“President Wickremesinghe openly said opposition MPs will be appointed as chairpersons of the main committees when he was the Prime Minister. In addition Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena  had also given us assurance. We therefore request that the two committees should be appointed with SJB members as chairpersons,” Mr. Premadasa said.   Mr. Premajayantha who responded said all other committees except for COPE and COPA have been appointed as of now.
