The main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) which said the country is on the brink of another wave of Covid-19 yesterday urged the Government to implement its decision to make it compulsory for people to carry vaccine cards when going out.
SJB MP Mayantha Dissanayake told a press conference that it should be done forthwith.
“Mistakes made when combating the pandemic in the recent past should not be repeated. Every possible step should be made to avoid another wave of COVID-19,” he said.
“New guidelines should be given to restrict gatherings in public places such as restaurants,” he added.
It was announced by the Government in December last year that COVID vaccine cards will be made compulsory and that health officials were drawing up arrangements to implement the regulations from early this year. Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella had assured that health authorities will make arrangements to implement the procedure soon. It was also reported that the Attorney General had given the green light to go ahead and implement the procedure.
MP Dissanayake said the Government should maintain a check on the availability of adequate stocks of food, especially because a drop of harvest is anticipated.
