Despite the public wrath developing further and further against the politicians, the unruly conduct of two MPs- Chaminda Wijesiri of Samagi Jana Balawegaya and Tissa Kuttiarachchi of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna- promoted Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana to suspend day’s proceedings.

A verbal confrontation between the two MPs – both from the Badulla District- after Mr. Wijesiri charged that 15 STF (Special Task Force) men have been deployed for the security of Mr. Kuttiarachchi’s residence. Mr. Kuttiarachchi who responded said even Mr. Wijesiri has been provided with the same kind of security.
Mr. Wijesiri then resorted to name-calling against Mr. Kuttiarachchi. He called the latter ‘Wambotu MP’ . Both the MPs lost their temper and Mr. Wijesiri threw a sanitiser bottle at Mr. Kuttiarachchi, an act unbecoming of a legislator who is required to be exemplary to others in the conduct.

The bottle landed on the desk where former Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi was seated. Unparliamentary language was heard at that moment

Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe then proposed the suspension of the sittings, and the Speaker heeded.

The Speaker announced his decision to suspend the sittings after the sessions resumed and requested the Deputy Serjeant-at-Arms to remove the two MPs from the chamber. He again suspended the sittings till it was done. The sitting resumed around five minutes later.
