Former President and SLFP leader Maithripala Sirisena yesterday said the party had not taken a decision to go solo at the future elections and as would such continue to support the SLPP led government of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Responding to a question posed by the Daily Mirror, Sirisena said he was yet to direct his attention whether to contest the Presidential poll in 2024.

“There are so many presidential hopefuls already in the fray for the next presidential election. Therefore, I think it is premature to take a decision whether to contest or not as the next presidential election has much time than meets the eye,” he added.

Sirisena met the press after he chaired the first inaugural meeting of the newly set up ‘SLFP Trade Union Bureau’ (SLFPTUB) at the party office.   The objective was to bring all SLFP affiliated trade unions in various sectors under one umbrella in a bid to strengthen the trade union campaign.   He told the media that notwithstanding to be one of the top constituent partners of the SLPP led government, the SLFP would carry out its reorganising, regrouping and strengthening of the party as it has been the tradition since its inception in 1951 whether in power or not.   “This is common to all other political parties of the country,” he noted.
