Ruling SLPP (Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna) admitted yesterday that it had a late night engagement with New Fortress Energy of the United States to work out the agreement for investment in the LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) energy sector in Sri Lanka.
In response to a query by the media at yesterday’s press conference, SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam said the finalisation of such an agreement involved meticulous work by the parties to it. Mr. Kariyawasam said the agreement was reviewed over and over to make it more advantageous to Sri Lanka. “We did it to make the agreement more and more beneficial to Sri Lanka. Otherwise, it is not an exercise aimed at harming the interests of Sri Lanka. When an agreement is signed, it has to be examined by the lawyers of both sides.
