Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam said there was no change in his and the party’s opinion with regard to the statement issued against the fuel price hike.

He made these remarks while speaking to the media after leaving the party’s office yesterday. The statement issued along with his signature opposing the recent fuel price increase is the opinion of the party and will remain unchanged.

“No secret discussions. All what we do, we do them with transparency. The SLPP is the party created by the people of this country. We will make any decision on behalf of the people. We don’t have any fear of anything and we will continue to be so. I am still of that opinion regarding the letter issued by our party,” the General Secretary said.

Mr. Kariyawasam stated in a statement issued on SLPP letterhead last Saturday (12) that Energy Minister Udaya Gammanpila had failed to take adequate measures to prevent a fuel price increase and, therefore, should accept responsibility and resign from his position. The letter also stated that the subject minister should accept full responsibility for the rise in fuel prices.

However, the Energy Ministry has decided to up the fuel prices from midnight last Friday (11).
