The Police Special Task Force (STF) yesterday seized a large stock of illegal cigarettes worth over Rs.600,000 along with a man in Mutwal.
The STF personnel on information received raided a spot in Ramanathan Mawatha in Colombo 15 and took a 41-year-old resident of Ratmalana into custody.
Having questioned the suspect the sleuths recovered 800,000 sticks of an imported brand of cigarettes, which had been smuggled into the country recently.
The STF Organised Crime Detection Unit 1 officials on the instructions of STF Commandant DIG Waruna Jayasundara, ASP Kesara Rathnaweera and OIC S Dissanayake are conducting inquires.
The suspect along with the contraband had been handed over to the Kotahena Police for further investigations.
