Preventing Medical personnel commenting on COVID issue

Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa yesterday questioned the alleged move by the Minister of Health to stop the medical personnel from making public comments on the COVID- 19 pandemic.

Speaking during the debate on the Port City Economic Commission Bill in the House yesterday, he said the legislature should discuss the pandemic at a crisis period instead of the Port City.

“ It would have been more appropriate if Parliament discussed the pandemic at a time when the highest number of COVID- 19 patients and deaths are being recorded just 24 hours before. One can understand how the government deals with the pandemic when considering the order made by the Health Minister to all State medical personnel not to speak of the current pandemic situation,” Mr. Premadasa said.

Referring to the subject matter of the debate, Mr. Premadasa said the Supreme Court,  through its determination had indicated that 34 percent of the Port City Economic Commission Bill had violated the Constitution.
“  The SJB will not support the Port City Economic Commission Bill, though it will propose amendments,” he added.
