The Education Ministry announced that all schools will close from November 13 in preparation for the parliamentary elections scheduled for the following day (November 14).
Schools are expected to reopen on November 18 after the elections. The Ministry has informed the Election Commission, Provincial Education Secretaries, Provincial and Zonal Education Directors and other relevant parties regarding this decision.
Accordingly, schools will be handed over to the respective Grama Niladhari officers after classes end on November 12.
Education Ministry Secretary, Ms. J.M. Thilaka Jayasundara requested that all Zonal Education Directors and Principals be notified about handing over the school desks, chairs and halls for election purposes.
It was further stated that, based on a request from the Chairman of the Election Commission, schools used as counting centres be closed only for the specific periods necessary.
