A section of the Jaffna town was locked down yesterday after 80 persons were found infected with the coronavirus from a sample of 670 persons who were PCR-tested.
Northern Province Director of Health Services Dr. A. Kedeeswaran told reporters that the District COVID Control Committee decided to lock down the high risk area that included a part of the Jaffna-Kankesanthurai highway, the Jaffna main bus stand, Hospital road, Jaffna public fair ground, Thirunelveli public fair ground and the Jaffna Fort.
A spokesman for the District COVID-19 Control Unit said they decided to shutdown to prevent any possible spread of the virus through the movement of people. He said all business establishments in the locked down area were ordered to put up shutters.
Health authorities with the help of the police and the security forces had taken step to prevent the entry of the public into the locked down area.
