The traditional drum beating ceremony in recent history after the reign of ancient Sinhala kings was held at Anuradhapura Ruwanweliseya Cheithiya last morning.
A group of 510 drummers participated.
The five fold traditional drums were sounded continually for one hour from 6.30am to 7.30am as a Pooja to the Cheithiya invoking the blessings of the gods to the people and the country.
The Shabda Pooja ceremony had been organized by Ven. Meda Mahanuwara Dhammasiri Thera of Malwatta Maha Vihara under the guidance of the Chief Incumbent of Ruwanweliseya Cheithiyarama and Chancellor of Rajarata University Ven. Eethal Wetunawewe Gnanatilleka Thera.
