The number of daily cases is very likely to see a major spike by the end of December this year, Health officials forewarned.

Deputy Director-General of Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath said the number of cases had surprisingly increased in several areas but the matter was not alarming.

“The spread of the virus cannot be controlled or stopped unless large gatherings are avoided irrespective of the implementation of safety measures,” he stressed.

“Thus, people are strongly advised not to attend events where people gather in large numbers for the sake of everyone's safety,” Dr. Herath added.

Meanwhile, Public Health Inspectors Union Head Upul Rohana said it was, in fact, pathetic that people did not understand the imminent danger posed by COVID-19 as they continued to ignore safety measures.
“With what is visible at present in terms of people’s poor response in following health guidelines and practices, cases could surge in unprecedented numbers by the end of December this year creating a chaotic situation,” he added.
