Foreign Employment and Labour Minister Manusha Nanayakkara yesterday said some MPs and social media had been paid to highlight issues pertaining to Sri Lanka’s expatriate workers.
However, the minister did not name any in making remarks in this regard.
“We have received information that some MPs have received payments for raising issues pertaining to Sri Lanka expatriate workers. We have also received information that social media groups have also been paid to carry out programmes on Sri Lankan expatriates on their portals,” the Minister said.
“It has also been disclosed that an unlawful insurance scheme has been carried out by certain Sri Lankan diplomats together with politicians. A sum of US $ 30 has been charged from some Sri Lankan expatriate workers under this scheme but they have not been given any benefit in return,” he added.
