Steps have been taken to strengthen security of Parliamentarians and their residences following a request made by the party leaders, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana informed Parliament yesterday.
He told Parliament that Defense Secretary and Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security were directed to order the IGP to take necessary action to initiate a special security plan to provide additional security to the MPs’ and their residences.
He said party leaders informed him that their lives were at risk on their way to Parliament to attend sessions and on their way home.
The Speaker said preliminary actions have already been taken to strengthen security of Parliamentarians.
