Speaker’s office confirms receipt of presidents resignation

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has tendered his resignation Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana said yesterday.  

The Speaker’s office confirmed the receipt of the letter.  

In Sri Lanka’s history, this is the first time the presidential post fell vacant upon resignation of an incumbent President. Earlier in May ,1993, it fell vacant subsequent to the assassination of  then President R.Premadasa.  
The prime minister becomes the acting president of the country in such an eventuality.
