Special teams to assess damage to crops caused by flooding

The Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board has appointed a special team to assess the damage to crops caused by flooding.  

Chairman of the Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board, Pemasiri Jasingarachchi, told media that a special team will be dispatched to the farmlands tomorrow to start assessing the damage.  

  It was reported that 390,000 acres of cultivated land had been damaged due to rains coming down in torrents during the past few days. Most of the damages were reported from Polonnaruwa, Ampara and Moneragala Districts.   

In addition some 600 small tanks and dams which come under Agrarian Development Board have also been damaged. More than 500,000 people were affected by the torrential rains while 17 deaths were also reported.   

It was further reported that the flood situation which was experienced during the past few days has receded. Department of Meteorology said there could be rains exceeding 100mm at times in the North , North Central and Eastern Provinces.
