Sri Lanka to have its first physically challenged MP in new Parliament

Sri Lanka will see its first physically challenged MP with the decision by the ruling National People’s Power (NPP) to nominate Sugath Wasantha De Silva who is visually impaired though its national list.

Sugath Wasantha De Silva, President of the Sri Lanka Council of Visually Handicapped Graduates, was officially named by the NPP in its national list.    His entry is seen as a significant as he represents the visually handicapped community, bringing advocacy and awareness to issues of inclusiveness and accessibility to the awareness of the entire nation through the House. It is also seen as a progressive move as it could be considered as an act which ensures equality to people from all walks of life.
