Sri Lanka’s national carrier, SriLankan Airlines, which was under the purview of the Civil Aviation Ministry under the previous government, has been gazetted under the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development.
Outlining the duties and functions of ministries and institutions under the new government, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake issued a gazette extraordinary dated November 25 mentioning that SriLankans Airlines to come under the Finance Ministry, in which the President is the Minister.
The new government has abandoned plans to sell the debt-ridden national airline SriLankan Airlines, and will restructure it for a more profitable future.
The airline’s chairman Sarath Ganegoda earlier said that the President has instructed that the airline should be an institution that all Sri Lankans are proud of, and should be owned by Sri Lankans.
