State Minister of Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals Prof. Channa Jayasumana said there is the possibility of a new COVID-19 cluster emerging among teachers who demonstrated regardless of health guidelines.

Prof. Jayasumana said such demonstrations could not be approved at a time when highly contagious Delta variant was spreading across the world.

He said teachers had not been fully vaccinated, and therefore the emergence of a COVID-19 cluster among them could not be completely ruled out, as warned by experts.

“Teachers are entitled to their trade union rights. But, they staged demonstrations in the country. This can lead to the spread of the disease among them,” he said.
