A school student, who was arrested and kept in a detention centre on charges of murder and possession of a hand grenade, escaped from the prison officials while he was answering the question paper on the last day of the Ordinary Level examination, police said.
According to an order of the Panadura Magistrate’s Court, the boy has been detained at the Makola Boys’ Child Care Centre.
A senior police officer said that last Thursday, the student was brought to the examination centre under the protection of prison officials.
Police say that afterwards the boy wanted to go to the toilet while he was answering the question paper and accordingly the prison officer took the suspect to the toilet near the examination hall. At that time, the suspect had pushed the prison officer and run away, the police said.
Sapugaskanda police are conducting investigations to arrest the boy.
