The Trade Ministry yesterday opened tenders for the import of 100,000 tonnes of rice through an international competitive bidding process, sources said.
The stock will be imported to control rising rice prices in the local market.
The Cabinet decided last Monday to import rice to be sold at the regulated prices in the local retail market.
Besides, a procurement committee will be appointed comprising the secretaries to the Finance, Trade, Ports and Shipping and Agriculture Ministries to select the importers.
