Three political parties- Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), Ahila Ilangai People’s Congress and National People’s Power (NPP) which is an alliance led by Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP)- stressed the need for electoral reforms based on proportional representation (PR), Daily Mirror learns.
They informed the parliamentary select committee working on electoral reforms that such a system ensures fair representation for all.
They also advocated preferential voting. NPP MP Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said at least 50 per cent of slots on the National List should be reserved for women.
